SPRING TERM CLASSES
Decorative Pottery
Thursdays, 6 - 9 p.m., April 27–May 18, 2010 (4 classes)
Teaching Artist: Amanda Wolf
Create handmade pottery at a whole new level! Work on the potter’s wheel to refine your throwing skills. Develop a personal design sense as you learn forming and surface decoration using slips and carving techniques. Weekly demonstrations will include tips for improving functional wares and alternative finishes. Choose from over thirty glazes and complete your pieces in our high temperature gas or soda kiln. This course offers a comfortable setting for participants to explore and develop personal directions in their work with the support of a practicing potter and educator. Join us: share knowledge and learn from peers while expanding your network and artistic abilities. All skill levels welcome.

Raku—Make It & Bake It
Mondays, 6 - 9 p.m., April 26–June 14, 2010 (7 classes)
Teaching Artist: David Deily
Fire up your nightlife, join the fun, and learn an ancient technique for creating a unique appearance on the surface of your handmade ceramics. Make traditional pottery and whimsical sculptures while refining your hand building and wheel throwing skills. Then finish your pieces with a rapid firing that exposes the clay to thermal shock and produces distinctive patterns and colorations unique to Raku. Open to all skill levels.

WINTER TERM CLASSES
Potter’s Wheel Bootcamp
Thursdays, 6 - 9 p.m., March 25–April 22, 2010 (5 classes)
Instructor: David Deily
Enlist in this fast-paced five-week course focused on improving your skills at the wheel. Through structured lessons, we will concentrate on several forms and deepen understanding of the qualities and processes that make a better pot. The goal will be creating in quantity while improving quality! Be prepared to produce a lot of pots, glaze, and finish them in MCG’s high-fire kilns. This class is designed for those with some potter’s wheel experience.
Tuition: $75 + Materials Fee: $55 = $130 total*
*Classes may satisfy Act 48 credits and Pittsburgh Public Schools teachers eligible for tuition discount ($111.25 total for qualifying PPS teachers).
Surface & Soda
Tuesdays, 6 - 9 p.m., February 16–April 20, 2010 (10 classes)
Teaching Artist: Amanda Wolf
If you have experienced the captivating qualities of clay, you will enjoy this course focused on functional pottery. Learn to make your favorite forms while discovering the endless possibilities in surface design and decoration. Weekly demonstrations will include potter’s wheel techniques plus tips for decorating using painted slips, carving tools, and relief sculpture. All work made in this class will be finished and fired MCG’s soda kiln.
Tuition: $150 + Materials Fee: $115 = $265 total*

Kurt Weiser Artist Talk about Material and Process in Narrative Ceramic Objects
Friday, February 12 from 2 - 4 p.m.
Teaching Artist: Kurt Weiser
Kurt Weiser, Regents Professor of Art at Arizona State University, is best known for slip cast teapot forms adorned with complex and richly-painted, naturalistic imagery. Hear Weiser discuss the construction, drawing, painting, and firing techniques he employs to create objects that reflect his struggle to express the beautiful nature of materials and negotiate meaning and expression from the process of creation in ceramics. This event is made possible through a partnership with the Society for Contemporary Craft, which will be exhibiting Eden Revisited, a retrospective of Weiser’s work.
Tuition*: A limited number of registration slots will be available for $10 each.
*MCG Youth & Arts will provide scholarships to teens enrolled in the Apprenticeship Training Program.
Korzcynski Workshop on Surface Decoration and LowFire Finish
Wednesday, February 24 from 6 - 9 p.m.
Teaching Artist: Ron Korczynski
Don’t miss this special hands-on workshop with local artist Ron Korczynski. Korczynski’s recent works have been extensively involved with highly decorative and functional lowfire work. His use of color and design on each individual piece is quite elaborate. He has taught art in the public school system for 32 years. Ron is a native of Natrona Heights, PA where he and his wife, Judy, maintain a studio and gallery in their home.
