2000 to 2001: Archive of Exhibitions

MCG Staff Exhibition
This exhibition included work in clay, photography, digital art, drawing and design. MCG staff artists presented informal gallery talks scheduled during school field trips throughout the exhibition. These events provided insight into the creative process for community members, highlighted opportunities for artists' residencies with schools and helped to recruit students for MCG after-school programs.

Bea Nettles
Return Trips
Nettles' highly autobiographical works have often been conceived and produced as limited edition artist's books. At Manchester Craftsmen's Guild she will exhibit twenty-four, large-scale prints from the project entitled Return Trips. These composite prints convey the poetic impact of landscapes upon the artist's life, and how these places remain in memory to resurface at unexpected moments. Nettles delivered a public lecture about her artistic development and conducted a two-day workshop with high school students on creating autobiographical narratives through photographic books.

Luciano Franchi de Alfaro III
Byzantium Mosaic Workshop
The Byzantium Mosaic Workshop was founded in 1990. Its work incorporates a variety of media including marble and glass tessarae to create utilitarian and decorative objects, furniture and architectural environments. The Miami, Florida based workshop has executed numerous commissions including those for the Gloria Estefan Enterprises, Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando. Luciano Franchi de Alfaro III, principle and artistic director of Byzantium holds advanced degrees in photography, art history and ceramics from University of Miami, University of South Florida, University of Chicago, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Byzantium Mosaic workshop exhibited large-scale urns and mosaic murals at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. Luciano Franchi de Alfaro conducted a four-day residency that enhanced students and staff artists' abilities to plan and execute large-scale projects.

Hospice
This exhibition, curated by the Corcoran Institute of Art in Washington DC, investigates many dimensions of the hospice approach to healthcare from the personal to the professional. Five leading photographers, Jim Goldberg, Nan Golden, Sally Mann, Jack Radcliff, and Kathy Vargas. Each of these artists was commissioned to work directly with caregivers and patients over an extended period of time to create works that focus on the collaborative experience of hospice patients, family members, staff and volunteers. During the exhibition, MCG hosted a three-day residency with Jack Radcliffe focusing on the role of the contemporary photographer within the journalistic tradition.

Nicholas Joerling
Utilitarian Vessels
Potter, Nick Joerling alters wheel thrown forms that capture the plasticity and fluidity of wet clay in the fired state. His forms, while alluding to figurative gestures, lose none of the ergonomic integrity of the best-designed utilitarian pottery. Joerling maintains a studio near the tradition-rich, Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Joerling is a full-time studio potter whose work has been exhibited throughout the US. He has led visiting artist workshops at numerous arts centers and universities. During his four-day residency at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Joerling demonstrated in a local high school and conducted a workshop in throwing and altering functional pottery forms. He also delivered a free public lecture focusing on his life and work as a craftsman.

Wendel White
Small Towns Black Lives
A project that documents images and voices of historically African American communities in southern New Jersey. Manchester Craftsmen's Guild hosted a solo exhibition of prints collected from the project which is also viewable as an interactive website and CD-ROM that includes panoramic views of the landscapes, audio and video clips. During the course of a five-day residency, the artist worked with Manchester Craftsmen's Guild students to build a website based on notions of community and autobiography. This project incorporated photography, video and audio interviews. Wendel White delivered a free public lecture on the development of his career in the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild concert hall.

2001 Pittsburgh Public Secondary Schools All City Arts Showcase
Created by students throughout Pittsburgh, over two hundred works of art executed in the broadest variety of media from small metal jewelry to large-scale collaborative installations are included. Working with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Eleanor Friedberg Scholarship Fund, Manchester Craftsmen's Guild administered the distribution of over $60,000 in scholarships and awards through this exhibition. Smaller awards from local merchants and art institutions were also distributed. MCG published a catalogue of the exhibition and staged a public reception and awards ceremony.
