Photographs by Robert Lyons accompanied with poems by Chinua Achebe that explore the real Africa behind the stereotypes commonly held by Westerers. Displayed at both Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and Silver Eye Center for Photography , this work peels away layers of myth to explore the complexity, diversity and humanity of a place called Africa.

Free Concert! Soukous Stars
Come out on a cold winter evening and warm your soul to the sounds of Soukous Stars, the Paris-based supergroup consisting of guitarists Ya Mbongo Lokassa and Dally Kimoko, bassist Ngouma Lokito, drummer Getry Mavambu and vocalists Ballou Canta, Zitany Nell and Shimita. Formed in 1989, their Megamix Vol. 1 was one of the biggest soukous records of 1990. These accomplished artists have worked with world music sensations including Papa Wemba, Youssou N'Dour, Tabu Ley, Jimmy Cliff and Koffi Olomide.

Issues in Education Symposium: African Arts and Culture
A closing celebration for Robert Lyons' Another Africa exhibition, this one-day symposium is organized with the help of African artist, Elie Kihonia, a leading figure in the Pennsylvania traditional arts community and a native of Democratic Republic of Congo. Dr. Damien Pwono, Ford Foundation Program Officer for Arts and Media will deliver a keynote address. Other speakers include educators from Pittsburgh Public Schools, University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University and La Roche College. Resident artists Saihou Njie and Ibou N'Diaye share their work in the printmaking and ceramics studios. Pennsylvania artists speak about the influence of African cultures in contemporary art. Stay for lunch with African food by Caribou Catering. Advance registration strongly suggested.

One Shot Harris: Select Photographs from the Teenie Harris Collection
Reception: Friday, January 31, 7 - 9 p.m.
One Shot Harris, the title of a soon to be published book about Teenie Harris, documents in black and white pohotography the daily life of Pittsburgh's African American community during the heart of the 20th century. Working as a photographer for the Pittsburgh Courrier, Harris portrayed the Pittsburgh he knew and loved: sports heroes, jazz artists, politicians, people going about the business of life.

Film Premiere-
Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives
Join Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh for a free screening of Unchained Memories , a new HBO film created as part of the AOL/ Time Warner "Shared History" program. This documentary is produced in association with the Library of Congress, home of the Slave Narrative Collection. Recalling one of the darkest periods in our nation's history, the film draws upon the accounts of former slaves as told through interviews conducted in the 1930's by the government's Works Progress Administration. This film brings the words of these former slaves to life through the voices of celebrated actors, including Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle, Ozzie Davis, Rubie Dee, Robert Guillaume, Jasmine Guy, Samuel L. Jackson and Vanessa L. Williams. Unchained Memories debuts on HBO on Monday, February 10. See it here as our guest in the MCG Concert Hall before it airs on cable. Tickets limited to two per person. Cynthia Bringle

Clay works by one of the world's foremost studio potters. As an artist and teacher, Cynthia Bringle has inspired the careers of many of the finest functional potters now working. Her vessels and wall sculptures capture the plastic essence of clay, color and fire using a variety of forming processes and kilns. This show is not to be missed by any student or collector of contemporary ceramics.

Art Educators' Master Class
with Cynthia Bringle
This two-day workshop for is for K-12 art teachers only. Day one will include demonstration and discussion on issues in ceramic education with nationally known artist and educator, Cynthia Bringle from 10 AM-3 PM. An artist's lecture will begin at 4 PM and a reception follows until 6 PM.
Day two will run from 10 AM - 3 PM. During this Teachers-Teach-In, MCG staff will join area arts educators to share ideas, glaze formulae, firing schedules, lesson plans and projects that are working in their schools. We will also begin to map out art historical reference points and strategies of critical analysis for ceramics education at the K-12 level.
