Creativity heats up at MCG when the school year ends. For six weeks during the summer, our four arts studios—ceramics, design, digital and photography—are the cool place to be. Eligible teens are encouraged to join the fun, create your own works of art or just master the art of creativity. Regardless of prior experience or skill level, this is sure to be the highlight of your summer!
All 2008 summer courses meet from 1–4 p.m. each Monday through Thursday between June 23–July 31. One day each week will be used as an exploration day, which will involve students taking a field trip off-site or working on special one-day projects within an alternate studio. This year’s Summer Studio Intensive will also include a unique six day visiting artist workshop with the Society of Sculptors and Hot Metal Happening, and a Family Day event on Friday, July 25. Public bus tickets will be provided each day for students’ commute home.
Potter's Paradise, Ceramics Studio
Every student from beginner to advanced is welcome to MCG’s Ceramics Studio for six weeks of working in the mud! By focusing on two main production techniques, every student will create ceramic pieces with their own distinctive flair. Using hand building to wheel throwing and high fire to soda kiln finishing, we will create ceramics ranging from the practical to the aesthetic. As a special treat, local artists have invited MCG ceramics students into their studio to see production pottery first-hand. Join us in ceramics for a sensational summer!
A Design-a-day Summer Spectacular, Design Arts Studio
From printmaking to inflatable sculpture to silk screening, each week is a new experience during the summer in MCG’s Design Studio. Join us for six weeks of exploration in a wide range of media and techniques—create works of art to strengthen your portfolio or create just for sheer fun! Summer Studios are a great opportunity to learn more about our after-school courses but, no matter your reason for participating, the Design Studio promises to make it worth your while!
Summer Blockbuster, Digital Arts Studio
If you have always wanted to produce your own movie, if you want to jump into the YouTube! Revolution or if you’re looking to improve your video making abilities, then Summer Blockbuster is for you! Join us in MCG’s Digital Studio where each student will create his/her own short blockbuster movie. Using three CCD mini-DV cameras and Adobe Premier Pro software, we will venture out to shoot “on location”, learn creative camera techniques and then explore the endless possibilities of green screen and special effects. No matter your prior experience, come with an original idea or just a favorite movie you’d like to recreate, and by the end of the six weeks you will have published your own movie to DVD and YouTube!
Photo Finesse, Photography Studio
Whether you are a Photo studio regular or have never stepped foot in MCG, summer’s great weather is the perfect time to get into photography and snap images all around the city! Both new and returning students will have the chance to enhance their skills in traditional black & white photography and printing techniques, while also experimenting with funky alternative methods. Then fast-forward to modern technology and learn to master digital cameras, scanners and digital imaging on the computer. It doesn’t matter what you might already know, Photo Finesse is sure to scratch your itch for something new and exciting!
