Following a short video about stonescaping, we meet Penland's master gardener, Sara Runkel who has been working with David to select the sites and deposit the stones where our four teams will work. We meet at the closest trail head where the red team will be working and David explains how to go about moving the massive stone slabs, sink the ends into the ground as vertical markers and build simple benches. Sara then gives each of the teams maps to find their locations where she has left |

large stones and a gravel along with work gloves, picks and shovels for each team.
Some of the stones weigh close to 500 pounds and there is no heavy equipment available. Each of the teams has to solve challenging problems that are both aesthetic and physical. In some cases, there are conflicting design ideas and combined with our lack of technical know-how the problems at hand seem at least momentarily insurmountable. It's sunny and for the first time in the week it's getting hot. (View Image)
The groups reconvene at lunch to commiserate and share problems hoping solutions will come… and they do. Sara has recommendations for the appropriate tools to help each team overcome at least one major dilemma. After lunch she arrives at each of the sites with resources and encouragement that provide a piece of the answer. Stacy also delivers water to help keep us from dehydrating. By 4 PM we are all exhausted but also accomplished. (View Image)
A few students have the energy to go to a movement class offered to all members of the Penland community at the Northlight studio. Most go back to the Craft House for a shower and a rest before dinner. This evening Manchester students host a paste paper teach-in for other Penland students and teachers. Though the event does not draw a large crowd, those that do come are appreciative of the students' ability as teachers. Guild students also use this time to explore night photography under the nearly-full moon and continue construction of journals, doing calligraphy and experimental drawing. (View Image)
