2009 Summer Studio Intensive
July 6–August 6

Creativity heats up at MCG when the school year ends. For five weeks during the summer, our four arts studios—ceramics, design, digital and photography—are the cool place to be. Eligible teens (13-18 years old) are encouraged to join the fun, create your own works of art or just master the art of creativity. Regardless of prior experience or skill level, this is sure to be the highlight of your summer!

All 2009 summer courses meet from 1-4 p.m. each Monday through Thursday between July 6-August 6. Each studio will take a specially organized field trip one Thursday during the summer. This year's Summer Studio Intensive will also include an end-of-program Family Day event celebration in conjunction with the exhibition reception for New Works by Diverse PA Artists on Friday, August 7 from 4-7 p.m.

Please understand that our classes are offered at no cost to the student, however MCG cannot provide support for transportation during this year's summer program; all students will be responsible for securing their own transportation to and from MCG each day.

Clay, Wind, and Fire—Ceramics Studio
Center your creative energy and become captivated by clay! Experiment in ceramics this summer, creating beautiful works of art that are funky, fun, and functional all at the same time. Learn to use the potter's wheel and enhance your throwing skills through weekly demonstrations and guided practice. We will cover tips for improving practical pottery and constructing clay sculptures. Then comes finishing forms, glazing, and using MCG's high temperature gas updraft and soda kilns to fire our work for the final touch! All students from beginner to advanced are welcome.

Design in the Deep End—Design Arts Studio
From screen-printing to kite making, mural painting to getting out and about, this summer is a spectacular sampler of the artistic side of the city in MCG's design studio. For the daring few that sign up, be prepared to experience five weeks of exploration in a wide range of media and techniques. Create for fun, create for show, create for the sake of your 'folio. There are no sharks in these waters--so smooth on the 'screen, slide on your shades, and jump in!

3, 2, 1 PodCast Off—Digital Arts Studio
Join the digital studio team and learn to Podcast yourself to the world. Create theme music for your show using digital audio software like Sony Acid and Garage Band. Travel on exciting field trips and meet Pittsburgh media professionals. Use mp3 audio recorders to document the sounds of Pittsburgh and interviews with special guests.

Photabulous—Photography Studio
Whether you are a Photo studio regular or have never stepped foot in MCG, summer's great weather is the perfect time to get into photography and snap images all around the region! Both new and returning students will have the chance to enhance their skills in traditional black & white photography and printing techniques, while also experimenting with funky alternative methods. Then fast-forward to modern technology and learn to master digital cameras, scanners and digital imaging on the computer. It doesn't matter what you might already know, Photabulous is the most fabulous place to be!
